A grow-up reel as a holiday gift for grandparents

Published 2026-10-25

Grandparents keep a lot of photos and see few of them. A thirty-second reel that walks through a grandchild's life, or through their own, is one of the few gifts that gets watched again and again. It costs nothing, and you can make it the evening before.

Two kinds of reel that land

  • The grandchild, birth to now. One or two photos per year, captioned with the age: "Newborn", "6 months", "Age 1"… ending on a recent photo.
  • Their own life. A school photo, a wedding portrait, their first grandchild on their lap, last summer. Scan or photograph the old prints, and the reel morphs one decade into the next.

Collect the photos (allow an hour)

  • For a child, use the People album on your phone: Apple Photos or Google Photos.
  • For older family photos, ask relatives to send their best one or two per decade, or photograph the prints at the next visit. See how to scan old photos with your phone.
  • Prefer photos where the face is clear and looking at the camera. Ten good photos beat forty blurry ones.

Settings that suit a gift

  • Title card: "Grandma, 1952 to today" or "Leo, year one".
  • Speed: slow it down to about 1.2 to 1.6 seconds a photo, so each one gets a moment.
  • Music: Warm piano or Ambient.
  • Shape: 16:9 if it will be played on a TV, 9:16 if it will be watched on a phone.
  • Captions: Age for a child; Year for a life in old photos.

Giving it

  • Send it. The video is an ordinary MP4 file. Send it by message or email, or put it in a shared family album.
  • Play it on the TV. From a phone, use AirPlay or Chromecast. From a laptop, a cable works. Many TVs also play MP4 from a USB stick.
  • A digital photo frame. Most frames that play video accept MP4.
  • Keep a copy. The reel exists only on your device until you save it, so download it before closing the page.
Can I make one for a couple?

Each reel follows one face so the eyes stay steady. Make two short reels, one per person, or one reel that follows one partner from childhood to the wedding.

Will the family's photos be uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. The page asks you to confirm the people in the photos would be happy with the video, and then it works only on your device.
