Grow-Up Reel

Grow-Up Reel › Rembrandt, 22 to 63

Rembrandt, age 22 to 63.

Rembrandt painted himself more than forty times. Here are fourteen of the paintings in date order, lined up by the eyes and morphed into one another: four decades of the same face, from a young man in Leiden to the last year of his life.

How the reel was made

With the tool on this page, in a browser, with no editing afterwards. A face model found each painted face and 478 points on it: the outline, eyes, brows, nose and lips. Each painting was rotated, scaled and shifted so the eyes land in the same place, then the points of one face were moved smoothly to the points of the next while the two images crossfaded. That's the morph. Painted faces are found as reliably as photographed ones as long as the face is lit and turned towards the viewer.
