Myth check
Was Pets.com too early for online pet supplies?
Not a timing failure since 2026-10-25 · ledger #51
Chewy needed no technology that Pets.com lacked.
Short answer
Pets.com went public in February 2000 and liquidated in November 2000. It sold heavy, low-margin goods below cost and paid to ship them. Chewy (2011) sold the same products online without any technology that was missing in 2000, and PetSmart bought it for $3.35B in 2017. No enabler crossed in between; the economics were the problem.

- It lost money on every sale; no later enabler fixes that
The enablers it needed already existed; something else killed it.
