Was TiVo too early for digital video recording?
Not a timing failure since 2026-10-25 · ledger #69
Cable and satellite operators bundled DVRs and controlled distribution.
Short answer
TiVo launched the consumer DVR in 1999 and defined the category, but cable and satellite operators bundled their own DVRs into set-top boxes, and TiVo sold itself to Rovi in 2016. It was on time for DVRs; the operators controlled distribution. That is capture, not timing.

E6 Behavioural norm - Why it is not timing
- Enabler-owner capture: a partner owned the missing piece and took the market
The enablers it needed already existed; something else killed it.
