Is building apps for AI camera glasses ripe now?
Blocked on a check since 2026-10-25 · ledger #30
The install base is growing fast; platform-owner capture is the unpriced risk.
Short answer
Camera glasses failed as a product for a decade; then EssilorLuxottica sold 7 million Meta glasses in 2025 alone. About 10 million units a year is roughly where third-party app ecosystems have appeared before, so the install base is close. The open check is the TiVo and Apollo trap: the platform owner controls the app channel and can take any category an app proves.

- Ray-Ban Meta

An app layer needs enough devices and an open channel to them; the platform owner decides the second.

Dated calls
Each call is written to an append-only, hash-chained ledger before it resolves, with the probability, the date and the rule that decides it.
By 31 December 2027, Meta makes generally available a developer toolkit that lets any third-party developer publish an app that uses the camera of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, without per-developer approval.
Open · resolves 2027-12-31 · registered 2026-10-25
- Resolver
- Manual: Check Meta's developer documentation and announcements on the resolution date: the toolkit must be generally available (not a preview or waitlist) and open to any registered developer. Resolved by a scheduled review that appends the outcome and its evidence to the ledger.
- Falsified if
- On 31 December 2027 camera access for third-party apps is unavailable, in preview, waitlisted, or limited to approved partners.
- Why this probability
- An open app channel is the difference between an app ecosystem and the Apollo trap. Platform owners have opened camera access before, but usually slowly and on their own terms, so a little better than even.
