Case file: a category that formed
Why did the CueCat fail, and when did scanning real-world codes become viable?
Formed since 2026-10-25 · ledger #54
Camera phones in three-quarters of pockets and native QR reading (2017) made scanning effortless.
Short answer
Digital:Convergence gave away millions of CueCat barcode scanners in 2000 so readers could jump from print to web pages, and shut down in 2001. Readers had to be at a computer with a cable. The idea returned once cameras were in most pockets and iOS 11 (2017) read QR codes natively in the camera app.
