Why did Iridium go bankrupt, and what changed for satellite communications?

Formed since 2026-10-25 · ledger #57

The network outlived its financing; cheaper launch and smaller radios made satellite service a business.

Short answer

Iridium, spun out of Motorola, launched a 66-satellite network for phone calls anywhere and filed for bankruptcy in August 1999, nine months after service began, with billions invested. Handsets were bulky and calls expensive. Investors bought the network out of bankruptcy for $25M in 2001, erasing over $4B of debt; it still operates, which is the signature of an idea that was early rather than wrong.

The network cost billions to build and launch, and early handsets were large and expensive.
